Rev. Edward F. Lovell, age 90, quietly departed this life at home in his sleep just after midnight on January 23rd, with his children at his bedside. Born in Mt Airy, NC to parents James Walter Lovill, Sr., & Gladys Virginia Warren in May of 1927, “Ed” was a graduate of Mount Airy High School, class of 1943, and Kentucky Military Institute, class of 1944 (both Lyndon, KY & Venice, FL) as well as being a part-year student of the public schools in Sarasota, FL from 1937 to '43. Attending NC State University in 1944-'45, he entered active duty service with the US Naval Reserve in May of 1945, graduating as a Hospital Apprentice 1st Class from Hospital Corps School, USN Training Ctr., Bainbridge MD in September '45, serving at US Naval Hospital, Portsmouth, VA until being honorably discharged in December 1946 with the rank of Pharmacist Mate, 3rd Class. Enrolling in Wake Forest College in spring of 1947, he received a B.S. in 1950, studying both Physics & Pre-Med. Although he was accepted to Bowman-Gray Medical School for the fall of '50, he eventually entered ministry instead, attending Crozer Seminary, Chester, PA 1953-'55, with a 2-year hiatus (including teaching school for the year '57-'58 at White Plains High), and eventually earning his Masters of Divinity from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in May of 1960. Marrying Annabelle Taylor of White Plains, NC in June of 1951, they had 3 children before being divorced in 1977. His second marriage to Sondra Doreen Dunn of Salem, VA was in April of 1978 with subsequent divorce in ‘99. 1999 also marked his retirement from a 35-year career as a minister of the Southern Baptist Convention, with roles including: Pastor, First Baptist Church of Pulaski, VA (1960-1969), Internship and Residency as a Chaplin in the Dept. of Pastoral Care, NC Baptist Hospitals, Winston-Salem, NC (1969-1971), Director of Chaplains Dept.(aka Pastoral Care), Roanoke Memorial Hospitals (1971-'91), and Assoc. Chaplain, VA Medical Ctr., Salem, VA (1998-1999). While retired, he volunteered at WFU-Baptist Med.Ctr. (1999-2003) & Northern Hospital of Surry County, Mt. Airy, NC (2004-'10). Over the years, his hobbies included astronomy & playing bridge, and Ed was always active in singing with church choirs (most recently FBC of Mt. Airy), & Barbershop Chorus (SPEBSQSA). He is survived by his sister, Margaret L. Martin and husband Charlie N. Martin of Winston-Salem; and sons Edward F. Lovill, Jr.; Perry N. Lovill (of St. Petersburg, FL), and Peter M. Lovill, along with fiancée` Natalie A. Kowalchuk; as well as a nephew, Jeff Lovill (with wife Debbie), and niece Cathie Rogers(& husband) both of Colorado. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM Monday, January 29, 2018 at First Baptist Church with Dr. Roger Gilbert and Rev. Jay Meadows officiating. The family will receive friends Sunday night (28th) from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Mt. Airy. Online condolences may be made at www.moodyfuneralservices.com.
