Rev. J.L. Young

The Rev. J.L. Young, 82, of Mount Airy, a devoted Christian and a loving husband and father, passed away Saturday, February 3, 2018, at his home. The Rev. Young was born January 25, 1936, in Haywood County, one of seven children born to the late William Ale and Maude Mae Norris Young. J.L. served our country in the United States Army National Guard in his younger years. He pastored churches in Davidson and Surry counties for many years. He also spent years as an evangelist across the United States. He is survived by his wife of 19 years, Billie Graham Young of the home; three daughters and a son-in-law, Martha Beeson and Carol Young, both of Lexington, and Donna and Tim Howard of Linwood; a stepdaughter, Jody Webb of Palmyra, VA; three stepsons and their wives, Steve and Robin Rakes and Don and Angie Rakes, all of Columbus, OH, and Rick Rakes of Mount Airy; ten grandchildren, Steven Young, Chad Bundy, Jeremy Bundy, Candace Devito, Brian Bundy, Kristi Burris, Jason Lemley, Toby Lemley, Jessica Lemley, and Josh Lemley; ten stepgrandchildren, Nicole Rakes, Dustin Rakes, Ryan Rakes, Shawn Rakes, Kayla Rakes, Samantha Rakes, Donnie Rakes, Michael Webb, Jordain Webb, and Brynn Howard; twenty great-grandchildren; three great-stepgrandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Betty Dryer of Asheville; a brother and sister-in-law, Charles and Pat Young of Greer, SC; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, the Rev. Young was preceded in death by four sisters, Myrtle Cook, Elizabeth Fox, Ruth Parker, and Bernice Mason. The funeral service will be held Wednesday, February 7, 2018, at 2:00 PM at Mount Airy First Pentecostal Holiness Church, with the Rev. Brian Frazier and the Rev. Michael Combs officiating. Burial will follow at Skyline Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy, where his body will remain until carried to the church to lie-in-state 30 minutes before the funeral service.
