Rev. John D Bowman

The Rev. John D Bowman, 82, of 165 Antioch Avenue, Mount Airy, passed away Sunday morning, March 22, 2009, at Central Continuing Care Nursing Center. He was born December 21, 1926, in Patrick County, VA, the son of the late Dewey L. and Martha Ann Hall Bowman. John served our country in the United States Army during World War II. He retired from Renfro Corporation after 42 years of service and was a member of Antioch Baptist Church. The Rev. Bowman was also a well-known local minister, having served churches in Surry, Patrick, and Carroll counties for more than 40 years, including Doe Run Baptist and Mayo Mountain Baptist in Patrick County; Rome Baptist and Lambsburg Baptist in Carroll County; and Antioch Baptist, Slate Mountain Baptist, Albion Baptist, Fairview Baptist, New Hope Baptist, Rockford Baptist, Union Cross Baptist, Bannertown Baptist, Community Baptist, and Flippin Memorial Baptist in Surry County. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Rada B. Noah Bowman of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Peggy and Bill Miller of Mount Airy; two sons and daughters-in-law, Archie Dean and Chie Bowman and Leroy David and Patricia Bowman, all of Mount Airy; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; six sisters and two brothers-in-law, Gladys Boyd, Marie Bowman, Margaret Dowdy, and Frances and Weldon Tobler, all of Mount Airy, and Opal Bateman and Rose Annie and Roy Haymore, all of Ararat, VA; and a brother and sister-in-law, the Rev. Homer and Louise Bowman of Winston-Salem. The funeral service will be held Tuesday, March 24, 2009, at 2:00 PM at Antioch Baptist Church, with the Rev. Dale Wallace, the Rev. Clarence Marshall, the Rev. Homer Bowman, and Bill Hiatt officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff of Central Continuing Care, especially those on the 200 hall. Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, 401 Technology Lane, Suite 200, Mount Airy, NC 27030, or to the Antioch Baptist Church Building Fund, 137 Antioch Avenue, Mount Airy, NC 27030. The family will receive friends Monday from 7:00 to 9:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy, where his body will remain until carried to the church for the funeral service.
