Rev. Lanny R. Atkins

The Rev. Lanny R. Atkins, 71, of Dobson, passed away peacefully on Monday, November 27, 2017, at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home. He was born May 15, 1946, in Dobson, to the late Lemuel Webster Atkins and Hessie Haynes Atkins. Lanny was a teacher at Dobson Elementary School from 1968 to 1975 and Starmount High School from 1975 to 1985. In 1985, he and his wife, Sharron, answered a call to full-time ministry. Between 1985 and 2015, the couple served Tabbs Creek Baptist Church in Oxford, Advance First Baptist Church in Advance, Holly Springs Baptist Church in Mount Airy, and Rockford Baptist Church in Dobson. He also served First Baptist Church in Ronda as interim pastor for one year. Lanny is survived by his wife, Sharron Royall Atkins; a son, Andy Atkins and his wife, Tracy, of Dobson; a daughter, Annessa Beaman and her husband, David, of New Bern; six grandchildren, Samantha Atkins, Lydia Atkins, Daniel Atkins, Abigail Beaman, Joshua Beaman, and Tabitha Beaman; his mother-in-law, Susie Royall; a sister-in-law, Sandra Atkins; and a brother-in-law, J.T. Royall, Jr. and his wife, Alice. In addition to his parents, the Rev. Atkins was preceded in death by his brother, James Houston “Jay” Atkins. The family invites friends, colleagues, church members, and former students to join them for a memorial service at 2:00 PM on Saturday, December 2, 2017, at Rockford Baptist Church. Dr. Jim Pollard and the Rev. Scott Coleson will lead the service. The family will receive friends at the church from 12:30 to 1:45 PM and other times at the home. The burial will be private. The family wishes to express appreciation to the staff of both Central Continuing Care and the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home for their professionalism and compassion shown over the last several weeks. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Rockford Baptist Church, 4947 Rockford Road, Dobson, NC 27017 (ATTN: Missy Huffman) for audio-visual needs.
