Rev. Tommy Clay Floyd, 87, of Mount Airy, NC, passed away on September 20, 2022, at Wake Forest Baptist Hospital. The son of Clay and Mamie Davis Floyd, Tommy was born in Davidson County, NC on August 27, 1935, and was one of eight children. As a young adult, Tommy was called into the gospel ministry in November 1955 prior to enlisting in the U.S. Navy Reserve in February 1958, where he served as a Firefighter on Midway Island for approximately two years. Immediately following his active service, he married Barbara Queen from Lexington, NC on April 17, 1960, and they welcomed their daughter, Anita, in February 1961 and their son, Tommy Lee, in August 1962. Rev. Floyd was then ordained in June 1966 upon the recommendation of Floyd Baptist Church in Lexington, NC, where his mother served as a trustee. While Tommy spent most of his life in North Carolina, he also called Moneta, Virginia home. Nestled in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley, Tommy pastored Radford Baptist Church, and was an active participant and Chaplain of Future Farmers of America during the 1970s. Tommy and his family then moved to Mount Airy, NC, in October 1979, where he pastored at Indian Grove Baptist Church for 33 years, before retiring after over 50 years in active ministry. He officiated the weddings of both of his children in 1982 and soon became a grandfather at the young age of 47, proudly taking on the name “Papaw,” which his family fondly called him for the next 40 years. A beloved member of his community, Tommy never met a stranger. He loved gardening, canning, and fishing, he made the best peaches and cream oatmeal for his grandchildren and enjoyed watching the Atlanta Braves play ball. Left to cherish his memories are his wife Barbara Q. Floyd of 62 years, his loyal canine companion, Sophia Lea, his daughter Anita Vogler (Mark) of Pilot Mountain, NC, his son Tommy Lee Floyd of Lexington, NC, his grandchildren Jessica Floyd Denman (Stanton) of Washington, DC, William Floyd (Ashley) of Birmingham, AL, Heather Vogler Doss (Jason) of Pinnacle, NC, and Jordan Vogler of Pilot Mountain, NC, his great-grandchildren Rory, Byron, and Elizabeth Grace Denman of Washington, DC, his sister, Martha McDaniel of Thomasville, NC, his sister-in-law, Barbara Ann Queen of Lexington, NC, his brothers-in-law, Roy Bates, Eugene Queen, Boyd Queen (Janice), Don Queen (Linda) all of Lexington, NC and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins. Tommy was preceded in death by his parents, Clay and Mamie Floyd, six of his siblings, a brother-in-law, and a sister-in-law: Dalvin “Pevine” Floyd, Albert “Gurney” Floyd, Jerry “Buddy” Floyd, Bryce Floyd, Maxine Bates, Mildred “Mick” Byerly, Roy “June” Queen, and Betty Jo Queen. The family would like to express their sincerest appreciation to Dillard Simmons for being such a dear friend to their Papaw and to the 9th Floor staff of the Reynolds Tower at Baptist Hospital for their care and support during his final days. The funeral will be held by Mr. Bill Faw and Dr. Darrell Tate on Saturday, September 24, 2022, at 11:00 AM at Moody Funeral Service in Mount Airy, NC. The family will accept visitors prior to the funeral service beginning at 9:30 AM. The burial service will follow at Skyline Memory Garden in Mount Airy, NC.
