Rev. Warren Gamaliel Harding Hawks age 86 of 2096 Fancy Gap Road, Mt. Airy, NC widower of Mrs. Alene Alice Smith Hawks passed away Tuesday, January 15, 2008 at Northern Hospital of Surry County. He was born March 24, 1921 in Carroll County, VA to the late Joseph Lee and Mary Magdalene Reynolds Hawks. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the US Navy and in the US Army during the Korean War. In World War II he served on the USS Cresent City ATA21 and SS Hatcreek Armed Guard Ship as a signelman third class in the Pacific Theater. He was a graduate of High Point University with two years of Divinity School at Duke University. Rev. Hawks served 33 years of active ministry with the United Methodist Church throughout Piedmont NC, beginning in the hills of Virginia and ending his ministry at the East Bend Charge. Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Janet H. Spoon and husband, Buddy (J.M., Jr.), Lenoir, NC, a son and daughter-in-law, Timothy W. Hawks and Debra, Baltic, CT, his four grandchildren, Judy Mullis Rogers and husband, Scott, Angier, Joy Mullis Clark and husband, George, Iron Station, Jason Hawks, Baltic, CT., and Shannon Hawks, Baltic, CT, four great grandchildren, Daniel,, David, and Joanna Rogers all of Angier, and Jessica Clark, Iron Station, brother and three sisters-in-law, John D. Hawks and Helen, Mt. Airy, Sophia Smith Hawks and Eunice Vernon Hawks, both of Mt. Airy, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to his wife and parents, Rev. Hawks was preceded in death by four infant children, three sisters, Polly Snyder, Eliza Hall and Leona Gwyn, three brothers, Zeak, William Henry, and Luther Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Friday, January 18, 2008 at Epworth United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. Bud Cameron and Rev. Marietta Smith. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Full military rites will be conducted at the graveside by the VFW Memorial Honor Guard Post 2019, Mt. Airy and Post 936 Pilot Mountain. The family will receive friends7-9 Pm Thursday night at Moody Funeral Home of Mt. Airy.
