Richard Rutherford Blews, Jr

Mr. Richard Rutherford Blews, Jr., 99, of Mount Airy, passed away Tuesday night, November 15, 2016, at Central Continuing Care. Mr. Blews was born January 9, 1917, in Evansville, WI, the son of the Rev. Dr. Richard Rutherford Blews, Sr. and Iva Ostrander Blews. Richard earned his associate’s degree at Greenville College in Pennsylvania, a Bachelor of Science degree from Penn State University, and a master’s degree from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He worked as the chief engineer of the propeller division at Curtiss Wright Corporation in New Jersey for many years. While living in Charleston, SC, he worked at Avco Lycoming Corporation and was a self-employed architect and building contractor. Additionally, Richard owned and operated Solar Engineering. Mr. Blews was a dedicated Christian and an active member of Haymore Memorial Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife of 74 years, Dorothy Mildred Williams Blews of Mount Airy; a daughter and son-in-law, Danajean and Carles Mabry of Mount Airy; four sons and two daughters-in-law, Peter and Cindy Blews of Tampa, FL, Kevin Blews of Swansboro, Richard Rutherford Blews, III of Cape Coral, FL, and Don and Linda Blews of Greer, SC; ten grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; and a sister, Lenys Blews Hazen of Elwood City, PA. In addition to his parents, Mr. Blews was preceded in death by a brother, Ed Blews. A service of worship and celebration of Richard’s life will be held Saturday, November 19, 2016, at 11:00 AM at Haymore Memorial Baptist Church, with the Rev. Robert McCrary officiating. No formal visitation will be held at the church; however, the family will greet friends immediately following the service. Inurnment will take place at Oakdale Cemetery at a later date. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to Haymore Memorial Baptist Church, P.O. Box 27, Mount Airy, NC 27030. Moody Funeral Services in Mount Airy is serving the family.
