Mr. Richard Garrett Calloway, 62, of Mount Airy, passed away early Friday morning, September 25, 2009, at the Charles George VA Medical Center in Asheville. Born July 29, 1947, in Asheville, he was the son of William Douglas Calloway and Frances Edwards Calloway. He voluntarily enrolled in the United States Marine Corps, and, after four years of active duty, including two years in Vietnam, he attended Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in business. A resident of Mount Airy for over 30 years and an active member in the Mount Airy Elks Lodge, he enjoyed volunteering his time to his fellow veterans at the VA Hospital in Salisbury. He is survived by three children, Katie Saunders and her husband, Matthew Saunders, of Indian Trail, Andy Calloway of Miami FL, and Preston Calloway of Mount Airy; a grandchild, Andrew Preston Saunders of Indian Trail; and two siblings, Patricia Smart and Bill Calloway of Weaverville. Mr. Calloway was preceded in death by his parents, William Douglas and Frances Edwards Calloway; and a brother, John Douglas Calloway. A military service will be held at the state veterans' cemetery in Black Mountain on Tuesday, September 29, 2009. The family will receive friends Wednesday, September 30, 2009, from 7:00 to 9:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy.
