Richard McKinley Hardy

Mr. Richard McKinley Hardy, 79, devoted husband of Mrs. Betty Wood Hardy, of Dobson, passed away at his home on Monday July 2, 2007 with his loving family by his side. He was born in Surry County on February 6, 1928 to the late Ed and Hughia Fulk Hardy. Mr. Hardy was retired from Chatham Manufacturing Company and was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served our country during the Korean War. He was an avid golfer and faithful member of Salem Fork Christian Church where he served as a Deacon until becoming an Elder. He held the office of the Chairman of the Board, Sunday School Superintendent and teacher. A loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend, he leaves behind to cherish his memory his loving wife of 56 years, Mrs. Betty Wood Hardy of the home; two daughters and a son-in-law, Becky and Jeff Perkins of Dobson and Robin Hardy Stephens of Raleigh; three precious grandchildren, Richard Lee and Brandi Poplin, Megan Stephens and Andrew Stephens; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Viola Nixon of Dobson and Carol and Frank Slaydon of Cary. In addition to his parents, Mr. Hardy was preceded in death by five sisters, Lillian Haymore, Geneva White, Pearl Wilmoth, Mary Stanley and Ella Nixon and a brother, Elbert Hardy. Funeral services will be held at 7 pm Tuesday at Salem Fork Christian Church where the family will receive friends from 5 pm until the hour of the funeral service. Services will be conducted by Rev. Joshua Gousey and Daisy Chambers. Burial, with the family present, will be held at 11 AM on Wednesday in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Salem Fork Christian Church 2245 White Dirt Road, Dobson, NC 27017 or to Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, 401 Technology Lane, Suite 200, Mt. Airy, NC 27030.
