Richard Lee Scott

Mr. Richard Lee Scott, age 86, of Fairystone,  passed away Friday, December 14, 2018, in his garden at home. He was born in Patrick County, on March 25,1932 to the late Luther Douthford Scott and Annice Mae Foley Scott. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Brewster Scott and Arnold Scott, an infant brother, and two sisters, Eunice Synan, and Phyllis Hanchey.

 

Mr. Scott was drafted during the Korean War and faithfully served in the U.S. Army. He returned home to Patrick County and married Mary Ellen Williams (daughter of Woodrow and Emma Nell (Hughes) Williams). He labored in a family sawmilling business and farming. He went on to retire from Bassett Furniture with over forty years of service (and many certificates of perfect attendance)! He enjoyed arrowhead hunting, drinking coffee, gardening, getting hay, farming, his John Deer tractors, learning about naturalist teachings, deeply respecting Native Americans, and wildlife. He was known for driving slowly in old model Volvos, and tinkering on most any machine that he could get to run. He preferred classical music and was a fan of Willie Nelson. His reading list included National Geographic, Jack London, and Benjamin Franklin.

 

Mr. Scott is survived by two daughters, and a son-in-law, Jennifer Scott of Meadows of Dan, Rose and John Wood of Stuart; five sons and a daughter-in-law, Lemuel Scott, of Woolwine, Everette Scott of Stuart, Walter and Derina Hylton Scott of Stuart, George Scott of Woolwine, and Travis Scott of Walnut Cove; fourteen grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, four brothers and sisters-in-law, Cecil Scott, Wilbur Scott and wife, Arlene, Greene Lloyd Scott, all of Stuart, Elliott (Elmo) Scott and wife, Debra of Penhook; one sister, Elaine Scott of Rocky Mount, and numerous nieces and nephews.

 

The family will receive friends Sunday, December 16, 2018, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Moody Funeral Home. Burial will be private. Flowers will be accepted or memorial donations may be made to the Smith River Rescue Squad, P.O.
