R.J. East

Mr. R.J. East, 73, of Mount Airy, passed away Tuesday afternoon, January 26, 2021, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem from complications of COVID-19.  Mr. East was born June 26, 1947, in Surry County, the son of the late Ralph and Viola Hall East.  R.J. retired from Centel Telephone Company and East Enterprises.  He was a veteran of the United States Army, a member of Granite Masonic Lodge #322 AF and AM, and a member Surry Shrine Club.  R.J. enjoyed attending local car shows and spending time each day at The Dairy Center with his buddies.  He will be greatly missed.  His last words to his good friend, Tommy, were “wear your mask.”  Surviving are his soulmate of 24 years, Amy Rodgers; his sweet, faithful companion, Dolly; and many nieces and nephews.  In addition to his parents, Mr. East was preceded in death by three sisters, Rachel Taylor, Linda Simpson, and Shelby Tucker; and two brothers, Ed East and Don East.  Due to the current COVID health situation, there will be a service at a later date.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.  Moody Funeral Services in Mount Airy is serving the family.
