Roanalda Cooke Hall

Roanalda "Tincy" Cooke Hall, 95, of 108 Tincy Lane, Mount Airy, widow of Joseph Glenn Hall, went to live with her Saviour on Monday, January 19, 2009, at Northern Hospital of Surry County in Mount Airy. Tincy was born December 5, 1913, in Westfield, to Levi Sanford and Amanda Wilson Cooke. She graduated from Westfield High School and attended Appalachian State Teachers College. Tincy was an outstanding student and athlete at Westfield. Many remember her for her skills on the basketball court. She taught one year at Westfield Elementary School and later worked for 12 years as a Teacher's Assistant at Westfield. Tincy loved working with the students and teachers. She made some wonderful memories during these years. Her love of education was passed onto her four daughters, each became teachers. An active member of Woodville Baptist Church, she was instrumental in starting the first Vacation Bible School, helped organize the Women's Missionary Union, and was secretary and treasurer of the WMU for 45 years. Later, one group was named the Tincy Hall Circle in her honor. She taught Sunday School for over 50 years and was secretary of the church for several years. She was faithful to her church and church work until declining health prevented her from attending regularly. Her first grandchild, Pat Martin, gave her the name "Mama Hall". Tincy became "Mama Hall" not only to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, but became known to others as "Mama Hall". Children she worked with at school, other family members, and all who met her fondly called her "Mama Hall". She will be dearly missed by many family members and friends. Tincy was blessed with many creative talents. She made sure that each of her daughters received instruction in crafts, such as sewing, quilting, crocheting, knitting, and cooking. She and her daughters spent many happy times working together to create memories over the years. Even in her last days, Tincy was crocheting a baby blanket for a young expectant mother. Many have benefited from receiving the results of these talents. During the last four months of Tincy's life, she was a resident at Golden Living Center at 542 Allred Mill Road in Mount Airy. These were happy times for her as she was able to share memories with old friends and neighbors. Tincy also made new friends and spent time comforting and cheering those friends and staff at Golden Living Center. Her encouraging words will continue to be a blessing for all at the center. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband; sisters, Mary Cooke Inman and Ailene Cooke Cox; brothers, Levi Gaston and Walter Graham Cooke; and sons-in-law, Jerry L. Frye and George H. Martin. Tincy is survived by daughters, Glenda H. Riddle and husband, Donald, of Westfield, Sandra H. Martin of Mount Airy, Faye H. Frye of Stoneville, Alda H. Wilmoth of Harlem, GA; sister, Virginia C. Bertazon of Boynton Beach, FL; grandchildren, Pat Martin (DeDe) of Garner, Gail M. Walden, Brad Martin (Trish), Steve Martin (Kelly), Donald C. Riddle, Jr. (Kim), all of Mount Airy, Joseph Riddle (Trish) of Winston-Salem, Mary Ann R. Walker (Ben) of Westfield, Douglas Martin (Bonnie) of Singelfinden, Germany, Matthew Frye (Tammy) of Pittsburgh, Kansas, Christopher Frye of Stoneville, Lisa H. Alveraz (Nelson) of Rockville, MD, Jessica H. Ruark (Mike) of Martinez, GA, Amanda and Allie Wilmoth of Harlem, GA; and twenty-four great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Memorial services will be held Wednesday, January 21, 2009, at 11:00 AM at Woodville Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Keith Love, the Rev. J. Cecil Hill, and the Rev. Rickey Martin. Interment will follow in the Woodville Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church from 6:00 to 9:00 on Tuesday eveningk and other times at the home of her daughter, Sandra Martin, 714 Norman Road, Mount Airy. Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be made to Woodville Baptist Church Building Fund, in care of Sandra H. Martin, 714 Norman Rd., Mount Airy, NC 27030. Tincy had expressd "thanks to everyone who has helped her by staying with her and helping her out with her house work, cooking, and the other things she couldn't do from her wheelchair." Her family wishes to also thank the staff of Golden Living Center in Mount Airy and the second floor staff at Northern Hospital of Surry Countyfor their kindness during her illness.
