Robert Craig "CJ" Hunter, Jr.

Mr. Robert Craig “CJ” Hunter Jr. went home to be with our Heavenly Father on the 8th of February. CJ was 29 years 10 months old. He was a proud graduate of North Surry High School Class of ‘09, Duke University Class of ‘13, and University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Class of ‘15! CJ lived to pursue his love of volleyball while nurturing the younger generation. He was a part of the Duke Volleyball program as an undergraduate student, and a part of the UNC-Chapel Hill Volleyball program as a graduate student. CJ began his professional career with the Blue Devil family as the Director of Volleyball Operations. In addition to his time and service with the Duke volleyball community, CJ coached at Triangle Volleyball Club starting with the 2013 season. In 2018, CJ transitioned into an administrative position for Triangle Volleyball Club while continuing to coach. CJ loved life to the fullest and valued the opportunity to spend life pursuing his passions as a career. He felt truly blessed by the community he served and the young adults he mentored! Outside of his professional career, CJ found his greatest joy in life with Sabrina “Bean”, the pup he rescued in 2019. His contagious laugh and beaming smile will be celebrated forevermore. CJ loved reading, learning, cooking, laughing, and sharing time with his family and friends. CJ lived each day with kindness, happiness, fierceness, determination, and strong faith.  While it is impossible to capture in words all that CJ’s life encompassed, it is simple to say he made our lives better and he is already so missed!  CJ’s memory will remain in the hearts of his mother, Michele Hunter; his siblings, Gaines Hunter, Worth and Abby Hunter, as well as Mary Grace and Elijah Jones. He is also survived by his maternal grandmother, Kay “Granny” Martin and his paternal grandmother, Kay “BB” Hunter. CJ also leaves a legacy of love and joy through his many aunts, uncles, cousins, and his soon-to-be first nephew, Raylan Craig Hunter. CJ was preceded in death by his father, Robert Craig Hunter; his maternal grandfather, Bob “Gramps” Martin; and his paternal grandfather, Bob Hunter. A service of celebration of CJ’s life will be held Friday, February 12, 2021, at 1:00 in the afternoon at Mountain View Baptist Church Cemetery with Dr. Jason Stopyra and Mr. Chad Freeman officiating.  CJ will lie in state from 12:00 until 1:00 at the cemetery on Friday for those who wish to pay their respects.  In lieu of flowers, CJ’s family requests donations be made to Triangle Volleyball Club or Saving Grace Animals for Adoption. Donations to Triangle Volleyball Club can be made via the link at www.trianglevolleyball.org, or these donations may be mailed to 121 Competition Center Drive, Morrisville, NC 27560.
