Robert Lee Gates

Mr. Robert Lee Gates, age 79, of Mount Airy, passed away Wednesday, January 2, 2019, at Central Continuing Care.  Mr. Gates was born in Surry County on May 10, 1939, to Matthew James and Carrie Boyd Gates.  He was the former owner/operator of Granite City Cleaning Service.  Surviving is his wife, Betty Marshall Gates; a son, Bryant Gates; a granddaughter, Teresa Gates; great grandchildren, Jaden Johnston, Asher Gates and Owen Gates; and a brother and sister-in-law, Frank and Dorothy Gates.  In addition to his parents, Mr. Gates was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Jean Bowman Gates; and a son, Owen Gates.  A graveside service will be held at 2:00 PM, Sunday, January 6, 2019, at Gunnell Family Cemetery.  There will not be a formal visitation.
