Robert Ray Simmons, 79, of Mount Airy, left this life to be with his Heavenly Father on Sunday, December 30, 2007. Born September 11, 1928, Mr. Simmons was the son of the late Samuel and Helen Worrell Simmons. He retired as a head meat-cutter for Kroger with 42 years of service, and was cherished by customers and co-workers alike. He was an avid fisherman, hunter, and outdoor sportsman. He was a member at Salem United Methodist church and served on numerous committees. He was well known for his sense of humor and generous heart. Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Hazel White Simmons; a daughter and son-in-law, Pam and Joe Burcham of Concord; a granddaughter, Andrea Burcham Jones and husband, Greg, of Matthews; and two great-grandchildren, Austin Phillip Jones and Addison Grace Jones; three brothers and a sister-in-law David and Mary Simmons of Kernersville, and Conrad "Buddy" Simmons and Stanton Simmons, both of King; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Mary and Dale Myers of Pfafftown and Kay Nichols of Mount Airy. A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held at 2:00 PM on Thursday, January 3, 2008, at Salem United Methodist Church in Mount Airy. The service will be conducted by the Rev. Dennis W. "Bud" Cameron. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Salem United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund, 354 Hay Street, Mount Airy, NC 27030.
