Mr. Robert Eugene “Bobby” Timmons, 91, of Mount Airy, passed away peacefully on Monday morning, April 29, 2024, at Surry Community Health and Rehabilitation Center, surrounded by his children. Mr. Timmons was born November 25, 1932. He was one of twelve children born to the late Mitchell Garfield and Essie Deatherage Timmons. After graduating high school from Flat Rock, where he excelled in all sports, he attended Wingate Junior College on a full basketball scholarship. There he met his soulmate and the love of his life, Doris. From Wingate, he attended Elon College on a full basketball scholarship and graduated with a BS degree in education. After graduating from Elon, he returned to Surry County with his bride. He began teaching and coaching football, basketball, baseball, and played church league softball. He touched so many lives of all ages throughout his 36 years as an educator and coach. He continued touching lives even after his retirement. As his granddaughters would say, “Grandpa brought the fun.” Bobby was honored and is a member of the Surry County Sports Hall of Fame. He loved his family, and his family loves him, never forgetting his cookouts, rides in the convertible (dragging Main), his stories, camping, and his love of friendly competition. His memory will live on forever in all the hearts he touched. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Doris Mathis Timmons; three children, Carla Timmons Kartanson, Cynthia Timmons, and Robby Timmons; granddaughters, Heather (Tyler) and Sarah (Jon); great-grandchildren, Willa, Evie, Sybil, Mary Beth, and Jonathon; and sisters, Myrtle and Peggy.
