Mr. Robert Lewis Woodson, "Sugar Bear", 60, of 334 Pine Creek Trail, Mount Airy, passed away Monday morning, May 30, 2011, at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson. Mr. Woodson was born July 18, 1950, in Surry County, son of the late Lewis Edward and Nannie Frances Brinkley Woodson. Robert graduated from Mount Airy High School in 1968. He worked as a disc jockey at WSYD in the late 60s and early 70s, and his listeners affectionately knew him as Sugar Bear. The Greater Mount Airy area had a rich tradition in bluegrass music; however, Robert introduced beach music to the local listeners. He truly touched many lives through his radio career. Mr. Woodson was a member of Haymore Memorial Baptist Church. Most importantly, he will be remembered as a wonderful husband, a loving father and grandfather, and an enthusiastic cook. He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Peggy Bryant Woodson of the home; a daughter, Rhiannon L. Woodson of East Bend; two sons and daughters-in-law, Chris and Cindy Ashburn of Lexington and Joel and Amanda Woodson of Mount Airy; three grandchildren, Ryver Woodson and Rayne Woodson, both of Mount Airy, and Shealin Ashburn of Lexington; a sister, Nelta Woodson Renegar of Clemmons; a brother and sister-in-law, Wayne and Mickey Woodson of Newport News, VA; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Woodson was preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Jack Renegar. A memorial service will be held Friday, June 3, 2011, at 2:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy. The family will receive friends Friday from noon until 2:00 PM at the funeral home.
