Miss Roberta Mae Cockerham, 69, of 838 South Main Street, Mount Airy, passed away Thursday night, September 22, 2011, at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson. Miss Cockerham was born February 9, 1942, in Surry County, one of six children born to the Rev. John Porter and Myrtle Mae Blizzard Cockerham. Roberta worked as a private-duty caregiver for many years. She is survived by a son and his special companion, Brian Neal Cockerham and Brenda Elaine Parcel of Pleasant Hill, MO; two sisters, Anne Cockerham Leftwich of Dobson and Erdine Cockerham White of White Plains; a brother and sister-in-law, John David and Darlene Cockerham of Elkin; several nieces and nephews; and several great nieces and nephews. Miss Cockerham was preceded in death by her parents, the Rev. John Porter and Myrtle Mae Blizzard Cockerham; a sister, Kathleen Cockerham Chaney; and a brother, Roger Cockerham. Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy will be in charge of the interment at Oakdale Cemetery beside her late parents. A private service will be held for the immediate family to celebrate Roberta's life. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home, 945 Zephyr Road, Dobson, NC 27017 or Surry Animal Rescue, 112 Quail Run Road, Mount Airy, NC 27030.
