A loving son, selfless brother, fun-loving uncle, good friend to all. A child of God, Roger "Dean" Hawks was called home to Jesus on Tuesday, March 25, 2008 after battling a rare illness. Dean was born November 23, 1961 to the late Thomas "Howard" Hawks Sr. and Wilma Journey Hawks. He is survived by three sisters and brothers-in-law, Revonda and Aldie Arrington of King, Sheila "Penny" and Larry Gwyn of the home, Janet and Ricky Hunter of Walkertown; brothers and sister-in-law, Thomas "Tommy Howard Hawks, Jr. and Joyce Hawks and his twin brother, Jimmy "Dale" Hawks and wife Rita all of Mt. Airy; Dean had many nieces and nephews but was more than just an uncle, he was a friend a shopping buddy and you would often find him playing with the younger kids just like he was one. He will be missed by each and every one of them. Nieces and nephews, Willie and Christy Gwyn, Candace "Candi" and Robert Smith, Jimmy Hawks and Amanda Butcher all of Mt. Airy, Torie and Jonathan Dixon and Matthew Gwyn of the home and Matthew's fiancee, Jessica Joyce, Steven and Rhonda Arrington and Carolyn "Sam" Hunter and husband all of King, Natasha Hunter, Cassandra Hunter and fiancee Larry Thomas of Walkertown, Kenneth and Jeannie Hawks of South Boston, VA. Dean's greatest joy in life was being around his great nieces and nephew and being involved in their lives, whether as a babysitter, friend or buddy or just someone to horse around with. Left behind to cherish the fun times they had with their "Uncle Dean" are, Laken Gwyn, his goddaughter and Ty Dixon of the home. Colburn and Sydney Gwyn, Carmen Smith and Cody and Kyle Butcher, all of Mt. Airy, Savannah Brindle and Daisy Hunter and Cierra and Gavin Thomas of Walkertown. Dean was a friend to everyone he met, whether you were a waitress at his favorite restaurant, a cashier at his favorite shopping place, or someone he brought he brought doughnuts to during his nine years of employment at Krispy Kreme. Dean enjoyed watching professional wrestling and was always up for an adventure. Anywhere you were going, if you needed someone to ride along, you could count on Dean to be there. Dean was also very active in his church, Woodland Baptist, where he was involved in the van ministry when his health permitted. Anyone who met Dean met the love of Jesus through him. In addition to his parents Dean was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Elbert and Margie Hawks, maternal grandmother, Maggie Journey, a brother, Roy Lee Hawks and three nephews, TH Hawks, Barry and Larry Gwyn. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Friday, March 28, 2008 at Woodland Baptist Church by Rev. Jimmy Slate with burial to follow at Midway Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday, March 27, 2008 from 7:00 until 9:00 PM at Woodland Baptist Church and at other times at the home of Sheila "Penny" and Larry Gwyn, 209 Atkins Lane Mt. Airy. Flowers will be accepted. The family request that donations be made to Moody Funeral Services, PO Box 1288, Mt. Airy to assist with the funeral expenses.
