Roger Douglas Jones

Mr. Roger Douglas Jones, age 75 of Mt. Airy; widower of Annie Belle Webb Jones, passed away Friday, February 02, 2007 at Surry Community Nursing Center. Mr. Jones was born in Surry County, September 1, 1931 to Robert Mack and Glena Mae Golding Jones. He served our country in the United States Navy aboard the USS Arnold J. Isbell, a destroyer assigned to patrol the seas off the coast of Korea. He was a charter member of the Franklin Volunteer Fire Department, serving as fire chief and as a member of the board of directors. He was a charter member of the Franklin Optimist Club and coached both Little League and Pony League baseball. He was also an avid golfer and member of White Pines Country Club. Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, Doug and Jan Jones and David and Lora Jones all of Mt. Airy; six grandchildren whom he loved dearly; Drew Jones, Emily Jones, Logan Jones, Ashley Pauley, Amber Pauley, Heather Young and husband Gary; great grandchildren; Madison and Alexis Young; two sisters; and a brother-in-law, Maxine Lannon of Washington, DC; Pat and Tom Maxcy of Florida; a brother-in-law, W. O. Webb of Mt. Airy; sisters-in-law, Alice Frances Willis of Mt. Airy; Peggy Taylor and husband Jack of King; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife and parents, Mr. Jones was preceded in death by five sisters and brothers. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 PM, Sunday, February 4, 2007 at Skyline memory Gardens, conducted by Erie Perry. Military honors at the graveside will be conducted by VFW Memorial Honor Guard Mount Airy Post 2019, which Mr. Jones was a member, and Pilot Mountain Post 9436. The family will receive friends Saturday night from 7:00 to 9:00 at Moody Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to American Red Cross at 844 West Lake Dr., Mt. Airy; NC 27030 or to the charity of the donor's choice.
