Mr. Roger Shelton Norton, Sr., 92, of Lowgap, North Carolina, passed away on Friday, May 14, 2021, at his home surrounded by his loving family. Roger was born in Joplin, Missouri, to the late Thomas Att and Ethel Dixon Norton. Roger proudly served his country in the United States Navy. After the Navy, Roger worked as a conductor for the Norfolk and Portsmouth Belt Line Railroad Company from which he retired. Never one to be still, he then worked as a truck driver for Yellow Freight Company, from which he retired a second time. In addition to his family, Roger enjoyed woodworking, and will be remembered in the community for the crosses that he built as contributions to their worship. Roger was a Christian and carried a small book of Bible verses in his shirt pocket, always handy if he found himself with a moment to read or share it. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. He will be deeply missed by all that knew him. Surviving Roger and honoring his memory are his wife of 40 years, Mary Lee Norton; children Roger Shelton Norton, Jr. and wife Daphne, Diana Lee Shepley and husband Robert, Patricia Kafafy and significant other Vance Wood, Nancy Baron, Mary Beth Trosper, Carolyn Mossop and husband Bill, and Carl Baron, III; eleven grandchildren; two sisters, Angeline Novak and Elaine Norton; and several nieces and nephews. Roger was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers Thomas, Elmer, and Stanley Norton, and sister Anna Norton; granddaughter, Ashley Amelia Shore, and two infant grandsons, Joshua Scott Shore and Logan Akela Trosper. A graveside service will be held on Monday, May 17, 2021, at 2:00 p.m., in the Zion Hill Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery with Dr. David Sparks officiating. Military honors will be conducted by the VFW Pilot Mountain Post 9436, and Mount Airy Post 2019. Moody Funeral Services of Mount Airy is serving the family.
