Mr. Roger W. Riggs, Sr. 86, of Mount Airy, a loving husband and father, passed away Saturday, October 21, 2006, at Northern Hospital of Surry County. Mr. Riggs was born December 18, 1919, in Surry County, to the late Fred L. and Nettie Shelton Riggs. He was a veteran of World War II, having served with the United States Air Force in Europe. He retired from Duke Power Company after almost 40 years of service. Mr. Riggs was a longtime member of First Baptist Church in Mount Airy. He enjoyed golf and was a member of Mount Airy Country Club. He was also a member of the Mount Airy Elks Lodge. He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Olive Monday Riggs of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Roger W. Riggs, Jr. and Muriel Riggs and Richard Dean and Debbie Riggs, all of Winston-Salem; five grandchildren, Ashley Riggs, Adam Riggs, Laura Riggs, Ryan Sills, and Katie Sills; a brother and four sisters-in-law, Robert L. and Pat Riggs, Annie Riggs, Annie Smith, and Arline Brown; four nieces, Charlotte Keiger, Frances Jackson, Carolyn Smith, and Barbara Harber; and a great niece, Anna Lee Keiger. In addition to his parents, Mr. Riggs was preceded in death by a sister and brother-in-law, Ruby and Robert Hiatt; and a brother, Roy Roscoe Riggs. The funeral service will be held Monday, October 23, 2006, at 11:00 AM at First Baptist Church in Mount Airy. The service will be conducted by Dr. Roger B. Gilbert, and burial will follow in the Oakdale Cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, 714 North Main Street, Mount Airy, NC 27030, or to Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, 401 Technology Lane, Suite 200, Mount Airy, NC 27030. The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to Dr. Samer Bibawi and his staff at the Forsyth Cancer Center in Mount Airy.
