Mr. Ronald Lee Dollyhigh, 69, of Winston-Salem, passed away peacefully at his home on Thursday, February 17, 2011. Mr. Dollyhigh was born November 29, 1941, in Surry County, to Margaret Lee Thomas Dollyhigh and the late Odis Winfred Dollyhigh. Ronald was best remembered as being an outstanding athlete. He was the quarterback and captain of the Mount Airy High School 1960 football team; he received a scholarship to pursue football at Appalachian State University. He was also an excellent baseball player and tried out with the Boston Red Sox. His accomplishments include president of Hi-y society, treasurer, monogram club, student council, and the Latin Club. His senior superlatives include most athletic and best personality. He served in the United States Army in Vietnam during 1966-1968 and was promoted to rank E-5. He and his wife, Phyllis, were members of Stanleyville First Baptist Church, where he was lead vocalist for a quartet. His occupation was that of a textile representative for Kernersville Carpets. Surviving are his wife, Phyllis Arrington Dollyhigh of the home; his mother, Margaret Lee Thomas Dollyhigh of Mount Airy; a sister and brother-in-law, Brenda and Tommy Hooker of Mount Airy; and two brothers and a sister-in-law, Randy Dollyhigh and his fiancée, Sherry Moore, and Tim and Irene Dollyhigh, all of Mount Airy; and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held Sunday, February 20, 2011, at 2:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy, with the Rev. Jimmy Slate officiating. Full military rites will be conducted at the conclusion of the service at the funeral home by the VFW Memorial Honor Guard. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Humane Society, 61 Miller Street, Winston-Salem, NC 27104 or the Davis Cancer Center at Forsyth Medical Center, 3333 Silas Creek Parkway, Winston-Salem, NC 27103. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff of Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care for all their wonderful love and care given to Ronald during his sickness.
