Mr. Ronnie Steven Atkins, also affectionally known as “Rockin Ronnie A”, age 74, of Dobson, passed away peacefully, Sunday, April 20, 2025, at his residence. He was born January 21, 1951, in Surry County, to the late Carl H. Atkins and the late Peggy Watson Atkins.
Left to cherish his memories are his loving wife of 41 years, Dixie Cook Atkins; his children Carl Steven Atkins, Sarah Kathryn Hutson, and William Shane Atkins; grandchildren Lane Montgomery Hutson, Charley Grace Hutson, and Sadie Lee Hutson; brother and sister-in-law, Kenneth and Carlene Atkins; sister and brother-in-law, Kim Atkins, and Kay and Mark Senter; special niece, Ashley Marie Simmons; special friends, Lynn Hayden, Danny Greenwood, and Dennis Haynes; and his furry companion, Harlee.
Ron was always a people person. He never met a stranger and could carry on a conversation with anyone. In the late 60’s and very early 70’s, he was a radio DJ at WSYD, affectionately known as “Rockin Ronnie A”. He eventually moved to sister stations at TIGER radio in Myrtle Beach SC and then Manning SC. He came back to Surry County in 1973 and worked in the tobacco market until he joined Surry County EMS in 1975. He made many lifelong friends not only with his coworkers but patients and families he met. He retired in 1993 and he and his wife, opened Images Studio, and again made an impact on so many. The studio operated for 30 years. Still needing something to do, he began a part time career with Moody-Davis Funeral Service, and finally had to retire in 2024 due to his health. Ron was also a proud member of Round peak Masonic Lodge # 616.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, April 22, 2025, at 6:30 PM, at Blues Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Tim Burton and John McCormick officiating. The family will receive friends in the fellowship hall following the service. The family requests that those attending dress casually. A graveside service will follow on Wednesday, April 23, at 11:00 AM, in the Blues Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.
A very special thank you to the friends and special neighbors for all their support and assistance during Ron’s three year cancer battle; to the staff of Novant Cancer Center in Mount Airy, and Dr. Karin Giodarno for their care and compassion, we are eternally grateful. Thank you, April and Brianna, from Mountain Valley Hospice for the care and compassion shown not only to Ron, but the entire family. A big thank you to John and Cindy McCormick for always being there to assist in his care and support of his family through his battle. Last but not least to the Moody-Davis family and friends being such good and caring people all the years to Ron and his family. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice, PO Box 325, Dobson NC 27017, or to St Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St Jude Place, Memphis TN 38105.
