Mrs. Rosalie Jarrell Simpson, 82, of Mount Airy, passed away early Tuesday morning, August 17, 2021, at her home. Mrs. Simpson was born August 29, 1938, in Cabell County, WV, the daughter of the late Porter Vass and Eathel Rebecca Meehling Jarrell. Rosalie was reared in the Pine Ridge community and graduated from Beulah High School in 1957. On December 6, 1958, Rosalie married James William Simpson, and together they were a vital part of the Mount Airy community for 62 years. She dedicated her life to the creation of a loving home for her family. Additionally, Rosalie was a longtime substitute teacher for Surry County Schools. She is survived by her husband, James William Simpson of the home; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Marty Simpson of Ararat and Monty and Dawn McMillian Simpson of Mount Airy; five grandchildren, Brittany Simpson Merz and her husband, Dr. Mike Merz, Samantha Simpson Kunz and her husband, Matthew Kunz, Jacob Simpson and his wife, Emily Simpson, Sgt. Sidney Simpson (United States Army) and his wife, Falisaty Simpson, and Stephanie Simpson; three great-grandchildren, Maggie Kunz, Violet Merz, and Hallie Kunz; four sisters and three brothers-in-law, Pearl Smith of Winston-Salem, and Brenda and Thomas Edwards, Sharon and Jimmy Boles, and Deborah and Bobby Puckett, all of Mount Airy; five brothers and four sisters-in-law, Richard “Dick” and Becky Jarrell of Jacksonville, FL, Lowell and Elaine Jarrell of Las Vegas, NV, Ronald and Barbara Jo Jarrell of Cana, VA, and Johnny and Linda Jarrell and Kenneth Jarrell, all of Mount Airy; a brother-in-law and three sisters-in-law, Leonard and Kayte Simpson of Elkin, Tish Caudle of Mount Airy, and Judy Simpson Lippy of Bumpass, VA; numerous nieces and nephews; and many, lifelong friends. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Simpson was preceded in death by two sisters, Joyce McMillian and Delores “Sis” Gantt; and three brothers, Larry Jarrell, Jerry Jarrell, and Mike Jarrell. The funeral service will be held Friday, August 20, 2021, at 4:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy, with Dr. Jonathan Casstevens and the Rev. Bill Watson officiating. Burial will follow in the Little Mountain Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday from 2:00 until 4:00 PM at the funeral home. The family wishes to express their gratitude for the love, care, and compassion shown by Dr. Susan Hines and staff at Novant Health Cancer Institute.
