Roshell Beamer Mayes

Mr. Roshell Beamer Mayes, 84, of Mount Airy, passed away early Sunday morning, August 14, 2016, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Mr. Mayes was born September 28, 1931, in Surry County, the son of the late Ray Roshell and Maggie Olga Mitchell Mayes. Due to an untimely death of both his parents, Roshell was reared by an uncle and aunt, George and Hester Mitchell. Roshell retired from Spencer’s Inc. after 27 years of service and was a member of Piney Grove Baptist Church. He is survived by a half-sister, Alpha Jean Slate; two foster sisters, Helen Mitchell White of Dobson and Vilena Mitchell Smith and her husband, Bill, of State Road; several nieces and nephews; and his extended family from Piney Grove Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, Mr. Mayes was preceded in death by his wife, Callie Edith Marion Mayes; a special uncle and aunt, George and Hester Mitchell; two sisters, Lillian Mayes Gross and Rachel Mayes Gross; and a brother, Wheeler Mayes. A graveside service will be held Thursday, August 18, 2016, at 2:00 PM at Piney Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, with the Rev. Mark A. Reece, Jr. officiating. No formal visitation will be held; however, the family will greet guests immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Piney Grove Baptist Church, P.O. Box 1022, Mount Airy, NC 27030. Moody Funeral Services in Mount Airy is serving the family.
