Mr. Roy Albert Asbury, 90, of Alleghany Center, 179 Combs St, Sparta, NC formerly of 219 Sexton Road, Mt. Airy, NC, passed away Thursday evening, July 21, 2022, at Alleghany Center in Sparta. Mr. Asbury was born April 12, 1932, in Tazwell County, Virginia, one of several children born to Charles Jefferson Asbury and Emma Lucille Waddell Asbury. Roy served our country in the United States Army as a sniper during the Korean War both overseas and in country. He was awarded the Bronze Star and Silver Star as well as many other numerous medals and accolades for his military service in theater and served as a Tanker, “Hell on Wheels”, in Germany and a Drill Sgt at Fort Dix, New Jersey. He was a former Facilities Manager for the Flygt Corporation in Stamford, Connecticut and upon retirement, moved to Mt. Airy, NC with his beloved wife, Mrs. Leona Taylor Asbury, formerly of Bluefield, Mercer County, West Virginia, and his beloved son, Thomas Michael Asbury, also a United States Army combat soldier of many years. Roy was a devoted husband, loving father, decorated war veteran, avid blood donor of many years to the Red Cross, protector of all animals, and a mentor to many throughout his life and to his family. Roy Asbury was preceded in death by his mother and father, brothers: Norman William Asbury, James Reese "Greek" Asbury, Charles John Asbury, Jr., George A. Asbury and Harry Lee Asbury as well as sisters: Betty Jean Asbury Mitchell, Mary :eona Asbury, and Daphne Juanita Asbury. He is survived by his devoted son, Thomas Michael Asbury and his wife, Leigh Ann, of Oklahoma, and their family. A funeral service will be held Wednesday, July 27, 2022, at 2:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Jonathan Casstevens officiating and military honors by VFW Memorial Honor Guard Post 2019 of Mt. Airy and Post 9436 of Pilot Mountain. Entombment will follow in Skyline Memory Gardens Mausoleum. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 1:00 until 2:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Mt. Airy.
