Roy Kenneth "Ken" Horton

It is with heavy hearts and profound gratitude that we announce the peaceful passing of Roy Kenneth Horton, known to all as Ken, on January 10, 2025, in Mount Airy, North Carolina.

Born on November 15, 1936, in Cana, Virginia, Ken was the beloved son of Thomas Kirtless Horton and Nellie Mae Horton and was predeceased by his siblings Ruby Parker, Bill Horton, Carrie McMillian, Mahaley Utt, and Richard Horton.

On August 13, 1955, Ken married Mona Griffin Horton, the love of his life, and together they shared nearly 70 years of love and devotion. He was a proud father to Karen Bowers (Rex), Roy Horton, Dee Wilson (Leon), Thomas Horton (Kristi), and Edward Horton (Angela), as well as a cherished grandfather to 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Ken was a proud graduate of Franklin High School. He dedicated 45 years to the hosiery industry before retiring to spend time with family and share his many passions. Ken served faithfully for more than 60 years at Mount Airy Wesleyan Church as a Sunday School teacher, former board member, and devoted servant of God. As an active member of Gideons International, he spread God’s word tirelessly. In retirement, Ken lifted hearts by singing gospel music in local nursing homes, sharing hope through his kindness and voice.

A service celebrating Ken’s life will be held at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy, NC, on Thursday, January 16, 2025, at 3:00 PM with the Rev. Richard Loman presiding. A burial will follow at Skyline Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends on Thursday, January 16, 2025, from 1:00 PM until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Gideons International, PO Box 1032, Mount Airy, NC 27030, in his memory.

The family expresses deep gratitude to Mountain Valley Hospice and the staff of Northern Regional Hospital for their compassionate care and support.

Ken’s life was a reflection of faith, love, and service. Though he will be greatly missed, his legacy endures in those he touched. We take comfort knowing he now rests in his eternal home, greeted with the words: “Well done, good and faithful servant… Enter into the joy of thy lord.” (Matthew 25:23)
