Ruby Barnes Flinchum

Mrs. Ruby Barnes Flinchum, 86, of Mount Airy, passed away Monday, August 9, 2010, at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson. Mrs. Flinchum was born April 19, 1924, in Surry County, to the late John Calvin and Alnie Riddle Barnes. She retired after 35 years of service as a secretary at Northern Hospital of Surry County. Mrs. Flinchum was a member of Bannertown Baptist Church, where she held various positions, including Sunday school teacher, choir member, and a WMU member. Mrs. Flinchum is survived by sisters-in-law, Sue Sutphin and her husband, Hugh, Geraldine Johnson, Ruby Hill Flinchum, and Ludie Neal Flinchum, all of Mount Airy, and Evelyn Turner Barnes of Martinsville, VA; several nieces and their husbands, Judy Pugh of Martinsville, VA, Jennie and Bill Curley of Martinsville,VA, and Forrest and David Connell and Judy and Allen Burton, all of Mount Airy; and several nephews and their wives, Doug and Bonnie Cook of Mount Airy, Sam and Rachel Cook of Rock Hill, SC, Eddie and Kay Flinchum of Mount Airy, Hugh and Nancy Sutphin of Greensboro, Phil and Patsy Sutphin of Concord, Mike and Fonda Butler of Mount Airy, and Steven Butler of Mount Airy. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Flinchum was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Gilbert Flinchum; a sister, Lucy Barnes Cook; and two brothers, Fred Barnes and Vester Barnes. The funeral service will be held Wednesday, August 11, 2010, at 11:00 AM at Bannertown Baptist Church, with the Rev. Milton Sewell officiating. Burial will follow at Oakdale Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday, August 11, 2010, from 10:00 until 11:00 AM at the church.
