Mrs. Ruby Mae Midkiff King, of Mount Airy, passed peacefully to her heavenly home on Sunday afternoon, February 19, 2017, from the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson, after suffering a stroke on Saturday, January 28, 2017. She was blessed with 89 wonderful and healthy years with her family, whom she loved dearly. Mrs. King was born December 26, 1927, in Surry County, one of five children born to the late Benton “Ben” and Maggie Deatherage Midkiff. At the age of 18, Ruby married Harry William King on June 8, 1946, and had 63 years of beloved marriage until his death on January 31, 2009. She worked in several hosiery mills throughout the Greater Mount Airy area all her adult life, and she later operated a florist for a short time. Flowers were her greatest joy, especially her different varieties of iris and jonquils. Mrs. King was a member of Piney Grove Baptist Church and the Bertha Chilton Sunday School Class. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Harriet and Jerry Atkins of Mount Airy; three grandchildren, Savannah Rose Atkins, Shelley May Atkins, and Harley William Atkins, all of Mount Airy; three great-grandchildren, Cloie Camellia Atkins, Braxton Colt Atkins, and Bradley Chet Cook, all of Mount Airy; two sisters, Bennie Midkiff Simmons and Ruth Midkiff DeHart, both of Mount Airy; two sisters-in-law; a brother-in-law; several nieces and nephews; and many great nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Mrs. King was preceded in death by her husband, Harry William King; a grandson, Jed William Atkins; and two sisters, Rachel Faye Midkiff and Mary Lou Midkiff. A service of worship and celebration of Ruby’s life will be held Wednesday, February 22, 2017, at 11:00 AM at Piney Grove Baptist Church, with the Rev. Mark A. Reece, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow at Skyline Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Piney Grove Baptist Church. At other times, the family welcomes friends to the home of Harriet and Jerry Atkins at 175 Cadle Ford Road, Mount Airy. Flowers will be accepted, or memorial contributions may be made to High Country Young Life, P.O. Box 209, Boone, NC 28607, where her grandson, Harley, is reaching teenagers of all types and positively impacting their lives, ultimately leading our younger generation to Jesus Christ.
