Mr. Rudolph Lane Atkins, 84, of 644 Calloway Road, Lowgap, passed away Wednesday, July 18, 2007, at his home. Mr. Atkins was born April 29, 1923, in Surry County, to the late Charlie and Dorothy "Dot" Hodges Atkins. He was a retired superintendent from Shields Inc. and a member of New Life Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Ruby Hodges Atkins of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Bruce Nations of Mount Airy; two sons and daughters-in-law, Dean and Barbara Atkins of Mount Airy and Rocky and Carolyn Atkins of Dobson; a stepson and spouse, Larry and Karen Calloway of Lowgap; seven grandchildren, Phillip Atkins, Tabatha Cox, Penny Tilley, Freedom Cutler, Jonathan Nations, Jennifer Gardner, and Mitchell Atkins; seven stepgrandchildren, Janet Jarrell, Darlene Hill, James Calloway, Cindy Casstevens, Robin Barger, Heather Marsh, and Amy Davis; nine great-grandchildren; eleven great-stepgrandchildren; and special friends, Tony Jarrell, Mike and Missy Flippin, and Clint Hill. In addition to his parents, Mr. Atkins was preceded in death by a stepdaughter, Angelena Jurney; a grandson, Matthew Atkins; three sisters, Ailene Goings, Marshall Bryant, and Josephine Parsons; and a brother, Billy Atkins. The funeral service will be held Saturday, July 21, 2007, at 11:00 AM at New Life Baptist Church. The service will be conducted by the Rev. Ernest Nichols, Dr. Craig Edwards, and the Rev. Dan Parr. Burial will follow in the New Life Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday from 7:00 to 9:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy, where his body will remain until carried to the church to lie-in-state 30 minutes before the funeral service. Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, 401 Technology Lane, Suite 200, Mount Airy, NC 27030.
