Mr. Russell Newton Smith, 62, of 1233 Century Park Avenue, Kernersville, passed away Sunday, April 6, 2008, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem. Mr. Smith was born December 14, 1945, in Surry County, to the late Herbert Neil and Nannie Vesti Shelton Smith. He was a member of the Christian faith and had worked as a draftsman for Carolina Cast Stone Company. He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Timothy Russell and Donna P. Smith of Kernersville; two grandchildren, Aaron Thomas Peoples and Alexander Yorke Peoples, both of Kernersville; five brothers and sisters-in-law, Herbert and Lori Smith of Smithfield, VA, Clarence and Shelby Smith, Bill and Jackie Smith, Bob and Shelby Smith, and Clay and Joan Smith, all of Mount Airy; a niece, LaVon Thomas of Mount Airy; a nephew, Tony Childress of Mount Airy; two great-nieces, Erika Moser of Charlotte and Haley Thomas of Mount Airy; a great-nephew, Corey Childress of Mount Airy; and several other nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Smith was preceded in death by a sister, Evelyn Childress. The funeral service will be held Wednesday, April 9, 2008, at 2:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy. The service will be conducted by the Rev. Stewart R. Mauck, and burial will follow in Salem United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday, April 8, 2008, from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at the funeral home. Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, 401 Technology Lane, Suite 200, Mount Airy, NC 27030, or Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, 100 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.
