On Tuesday, February 27, 2024, Mr. Sam Hodges, 85, woke up in the presence of the Lord in heaven after a long-fought battle and sickness.
Sam was born June 11, 1938, in Surry County, to Blan and Lillian Hodges. Sam had five siblings, Weldon, Dennis, Alita, Linda and Mark. He went to school in Lowgap and then entered the Navy in 1955.
Sam married the late Betty Lundy Hodges on April 21, 1958, and they had two children, Tim Hodges and the late Kim Hodges Reynolds. Sam and Betty were married for over 61 years.
After the Navy, Sam worked several years at RJ Reynolds and lived in Kernersville. In 1969, the family moved back to Mount Airy. While working as a plumber with his brother, Weldon, Sam began his outstanding community service in the Beulah community. He was a long-time member of the Beulah Ruritan Club. Sam brought Little League baseball to the Beulah area and established the Beulah Royals. There were so many kids at the first tryouts that the next year the Beulah Twins were formed. He coached baseball for many years. Sam was also the Scoutmaster in Beulah for Troop 517 for years and spent many summers at Camp Raven Knob. He shepherded and molded boys into young men from the community and developed several of the first Eagle Scouts for the troop. Sam also worked many other jobs throughout this time that were always service oriented, which is a testament to his nature.
After retirement, Sam spent his time working in his garden, being with family, traveling to ballgames, and volunteering at Northern Regional Hospital. Sam was an avid UNC and Atlanta Braves fan. He was also a loyal member of Community Baptist Church.
Sam was preceded in death by his parents, Blan and Lillian Hodges; his brother, Weldon Hodges; his daughter, Kim Hodges Reynolds; and his grandson, Timothy S. Hodges, Jr. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Tim and Kim Hodges of Ft. Myers, FL; a son-in-law, David Reynolds of Mount Airy; a granddaughter and her husband, Hannah and Justin Grill of Mount Airy; two grandsons, Jacob Hodges and Logan Hodges of Ft. Myers, FL; a granddaughter, Jordan Hodges of New York City, NY; a great-grandson, Kenan Grill of Mount Airy; and a special cousin, neighbor, and friend, Tina Edwards of Mount Airy. He is also survived by his siblings, Dennis (Elaine) Hodges of Hiddenite, Alita (Glenn) Gunter of Titusville, FL, Linda (Gary) Lowe of Lowgap, and Mark (Mary) Hodges of Lowgap.
The funeral service will be held Saturday, March 2, 2024, at 2:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy. The family will receive friends from 12:00 until 2:00 PM at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Skyline Memory Gardens, with military honors by the United States Navy and the VFW Memorial Honor Guard. The family will be accepting flowers in remembrance and celebration of Sam’s life, as well as donations to the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home, 945 Zephyr Road, Dobson, NC 27017.
The family would like to send a special thank you to all the staff at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home for everything they did during their stay.
