Mrs. Sara Davis Phillips, 98, of Mount Airy, passed away Tuesday, March 22, 2011, at Central Continuing Care. Mrs. Phillips was born November 1, 1912, in Cabarrus County, to the late Joseph Vernon and Minnie Williams Davis. Mrs. Phillips earned her degree from Guilford College, where she was elected May Queen by the entire student body in her senior year. She taught in Surry County Schools and Mount Airy City Schools for over 30 years as a music and mathematics teacher. She was a charter member for 54 years of Delta Kappa Gamma, an honorary teachers organization. Mrs. Phillips retired from the Mount Airy City School System. After retirement, she volunteered with Yokefellow Ministries, Northern Hospital of Surry County Auxiliary, and the American Red Cross. She was a devoted member of Mount Airy Friends Meeting, serving as a Sunday school teacher, pianist, organist, and in many offices and on various committees as long as her health permitted. She was very active in the United Society of Friends Women. Mrs. Phillips is survived by a daughter, Sara Lou Phillips Cardwell of Rockville, MD; two sons and daughters-in-law, Jim and Betsy Phillips of Mount Airy and Tom and Joyce Phillips of Brunswick, GA; six grandchildren, Jim Phillips and wife, Lilnette, and Jody Phillips and wife, Melissa, all of Mount Airy, Lee Cardwell and husband, Scott Honse, of Annapolis, MD, Bradley Cardwell and wife, Veronica Westendorff, of Davidson, John Smith of Lexington, and Joy Smith Walser and husband, Vance, of Lexington; ten great-grandchildren; a brother and sister-in-law, Joseph Vernon Davis, Jr. and Barbara of Concord; and sister-in-law, Clara Davis of Concord. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Phillips was preceded in death by her husband, A.P. Phillips, longtime principal of Flat Rock School; and a brother, S. Franklin Davis. A memorial service to celebrate and honor the life of Mrs. Phillips will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, March 26, 2011, at Mount Airy Friends Meeting, with Dr. Jon Cawley and Gary York officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the fellowship hall of the church. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations to the Mount Airy Friends Meeting, 109 West Wilson Street, Mount Airy, NC 27030 or to a charity of the donor's choice.
