Mrs. Sarah Ashby Martin Davenport, 92, of 156 Fairview Drive, Mount Airy, passed away Tuesday afternoon, January 29, 2013, at Golden Living Center. Mrs. Davenport was born August 16, 1920, in Surry County, one of seven children born to the late Franklin and Willie Gwyn Martin. Sarah retired as a knitter from Renfro Corporation and was a member of Rockford Street United Methodist Church. She is survived by a daughter, Glenda Davenport Gates of High Point; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Steve and Judy Davenport of Apex and Marty Davenport of Mount Airy; eight grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Florence Martin of Mount Airy; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Davenport was preceded in death by her husband, Vance Stephens Davenport; a sister, Edith Callaway; and five brothers, Franklin Martin, John Martin, Charlie Martin, Zeb Martin, and Roscoe Martin. The funeral service will be held Friday, February 1, 2013, at 2:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy, with the Rev. Kevin Wilson and the Rev. Rusty Reed officiating. Burial will follow at Oakdale Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday from 1:00 until 2:00 PM at the funeral home. The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to all of the caregivers, especially Carol Smith, for their love and tender care of Sarah in recent years. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Surry County Meals On Wheels, c/o YVEDDI, P.O.
