Mrs. Sarah Savannah McHone Whitaker, 86, of 127 Bank Street, Mount Airy, passed away Wednesday morning, February 1, 2012, at Northern Hospital of Surry County. Mrs. Whitaker was born March 17, 1925, in Stokes County, one of seventeen children born to the late William Anderson and Daisy Manring McHone. She retired from Renfro Corporation and was a member of White Plains Baptist Church. She is survived by a son, John Wayne McHone and his special friend, Mary Jones, of Mount Airy; two grandsons, Brandon McHone and Ben McHone and his wife, Teresa, all of Mount Airy; a great-grandson, Noah McHone of Mount Airy; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Alonzo "A.J." and Betty McHone of Greensboro, David McHone of Germanton, and Edgar "Ed" and Ann McHone of Coats; a special niece, Betty Jo Potts of Mount Airy; and several other nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Whitaker was preceded in death by her husband, Luther Wayne Whitaker; three sisters, Mescal McCraw, Helen Hicks, and Onie Mae Fulford; and ten brothers, Fred McHone, William McHone, Grayson McHone, John Henry McHone, Matthew McHone, Warren McHone, Franklin McHone, Paul McHone, Richard McHone, and Isaac McHone. The funeral service will be held Friday, February 3, 2012, at 2:00 PM at White Plains Baptist Church, with the Rev. Bill Tucker and the Rev. Tom Delph officiating. Burial will follow at Skyline Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends Thursday from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy, where her body will remain until carried to the church to lie-in-state 30 minutes prior to the funeral service. Flowers will be accepted, or memorial contributions may be made to White Plains Baptist Church, 614 Old Highway 601, Mount Airy, NC 27030.
