SFC. Jack Russell Morton, Sr. US Army (Ret.) age 80 of 236 Mountain View Drive, Mt. Airy, NC husband of Mrs. Betty McBride Morton passed away at his home Thursday, July 14, 2011. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, a friend to all and was a "great" provider for his family. He was born June 26, 1931in Surry County to the late William and Mary Bobbitt Morton. He was retired from the US Army having served for 22 years. Mr. Morton served during the Korean War and was a retired chef. Mr. Morton was a member of Woodland Baptist Church and VFW Post 2019, Mt. Airy. Surviving are his wife, Betty M. Morton of the home daughter, Ms. Bonnie Morton, Smithfield, three sons and two daughters-in-law, Jack R Morton, Jr. and Anna , Mt. Airy, Jerry Morton and Angel Mt. Airy, and Barry R. Morton, Pilot Mountain, grandchildren, Jared Morton and Gina , Ashley Morton, Christopher Lister, Amy Puckett, Nikki Williams, Jessica and Tommy Holland, Melissa Waters, Gabe Morton, Jake McBride, Daniel Morton, Kirstie Morton and Chrystal Pack, great grandchildren, Ethan Morton, Josh Williams, Nicholas Williams, Emily Holland, Seth Waters, Isaiah Waters, Jeremiah Baker, Gracie Puckett, Chloe Waters, God daughter and special friend, Tamera Miles, Mt. Airy, and three sisters, Mrs. Bernell Shelton, Shalotte, Ms. Barbara "Tootie" Morton, Mt. Airy and Ruth and Johnny Donathan, Mt. Airy. Mr. Morton was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Margaret Morton, a brother, Ray Morton and father-in-law and mother-in-law, Ed and Maggie Marshall McBride. Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Monday, July 18, 2011 at Moody Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by Rev. Jimmy Slate. Burial will follow in the McBride Family Cemetery. The family will receive friends 6-8 pm Sunday at Moody Funeral Home. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Woodland Baptist Church, 331 Highland Dr., Mt. Airy, NC 27030 or to Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, 401 Technology Lane, Suite 200, Mt. Airy, NC 27030. The family would like to express a "special thanks" the Ruth Handy and April Robertson with Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care and Dr. David Dixon for their care extended to Mr. Morton.
