Sharon Jeanette Hawks passed away in her home, surrounded by her beloved family, January 10, 2017 from complications of cholangiocarcinoma. She was born May 3, 1956, in Mt. Airy, NC and lived in Cana Virginia during her youth surrounded by her entire family. Sharon attended Virginia Tech and graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Nursing from Radford University and moved to Durham NC to pursue her anesthesia career. She attended the Nurse Anesthesia Program which was at Durham Regional Hospital (Duke Regional). She also graduated with her Masters of Science in Nursing from UNC-G and completed her Doctorate of Nursing Practice from Duke University School of Nursing. Sharon worked as a CRNA at Duke Hospital, Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, NC and in Asheville for Asheville Anesthesia Associates. During those years she was teacher, mentor and researcher to countless numbers of anesthesia students and staff. In 2006, Sharon joined the Nurse Anesthesia Program at Duke University School of Nursing as their Assistant Program Director of the Nurse Anesthesia Program. She eventually became the Program Director of that program.Her contributions to her program and profession were unending. The number of Students she has helped graduate into the profession are too many to count. This was her love and it showed in every aspect of her profession. She held many leadership positions with the State and National Associations. She published countless numbers of articles, research projects and authored many chapters in Anesthesia books. One of her main goals, with the help of her fabulous faculty, was to bring the Duke University School of Nurse Anesthesia to a ranking of #3 in the country. Sharon accomplished that this year. Sharon was proud but forever humble and wanted each student to become a leader. In the midst of all of her accomplishments, her greatest love was for her 2 beautiful daughters; Makena and Gabi. She will be forever missed by them and the rest of her family. She is survived by her partner of 25 years; Yvonne Overcast, their two children; Makena Overcast-Hawks and Gabrielle Overcast-Hawks; her parents; Ray and Carol Hawks, a sister and brother in law; Pamela and Johnny Bowman, a brother and sister in law; Bradley and Chastiny Hawks, nephews; Matthew and wife Kelly Bowman, Andrew and fiancée, Jessica Ayers, a niece; Charlotte Hawks, step nieces and nephews; Chance, Bailey and Brooks Sizemore, great nephew; Owen David Bowman and soon to be step great nieces; Noelle and Emelyn Rash as well as countless numbers of wonderful aunts, uncles and cousins who all live in and around the Cana, Virginia and Mt. Airy NC area. Sharon was preceded in death by Fielden and Bessie Hawks, Rev. Gurney and Ada Holder, one aunt, Frankie McMillian, one uncle, Rush Hawks. A memorial service will be held Saturday, January 14, 2017 at 2:00 PM at Flat Ridge Baptist Church, 2167 Epworth Rd, Cana, Virginia, 24317, with burial to follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until time for the service at the church. A reception will be held in the fellowship hall of Flat Ridge Baptist Church following the burial. A celebration of life will be held at the Duke Chapel on Duke Campus, Sunday January 22, 2017 at 2pm with a reception following at the Duke University School of Nursing Atrium. In lieu of flowers please consider donations to The Frank Titch/ Sharon Hawks Scholarship fund at The Duke University School of Nursing and to the ASPCA for sheltered animals.
