Mrs. Shelby Jean Midkiff Wood, 80, of Mount Airy, passed away Tuesday morning, January 23, 2018, at Northern Hospital of Surry County. Mrs. Wood was born July 24, 1937, in Surry County, one of three children born to the late George Clifford and Lillian Violet Barnard Midkiff. Shelby retired from Hanesbrands Inc. after many years of service and was a member of Flippin Memorial Baptist Church. She was well known in her community for hosting monthly “J.O.Y.” meetings for elderly folks. She is survived by a brother and sister-in-law, George Michael and Mary Midkiff of Mount Airy; two special nephews and their wives, George Michael Midkiff, Jr. and Suzanne Midkiff and Mitchell Paul and Tracy Midkiff, all of Mount Airy; five great nieces and nephews, Mason Midkiff, Morgan Midkiff, Mitchell Midkiff, Klyne Midkiff, and Lillian “Lily” Midkiff, all of Mount Airy; four loving aunts; and many extended family members from the Wood family. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Wood was preceded in death by her husband, Trent Gregson Wood; an infant brother, George Clifford Midkiff, Jr.; and a special canine companion, Smut. The funeral service will be held Thursday, January 25, 2018, at 11:00 AM at Flippin Memorial Baptist Church, with the Rev. Tim Burton officiating. Burial will follow at Oakdale Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday from 10:00 until 11:00 AM at the church. Flowers will be accepted, or memorial contributions may be made to the Flippin Memorial Baptist Church, c/o Fannie E. Burkhart, 2337 McBride Road, Mount Airy, NC 27030. Moody Funeral Services in Mount Airy is serving the family.
