Sherman Young Tompkins

Mr. Sherman Young Tompkins, 87, of Lowgap, passed away Wednesday night, May 10, 2023, at his home.  Mr. Tompkins was born March 1, 1936, in Alleghany County, the son of the late Young Haywood and Rachel Lou Hankins Tompkins.  Sherman retired from Woodruff’s Evergreens after many years of service.  He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Hattie Galyean Tompkins; two sisters, Marie Cline and Gelene Hughes; a sister-in-law, Carol Tompkins; several nieces and nephews, including Haywood Tompkins, Henry Tompkins, and Melinda Tompkins Shepherd; and a brother-in-law, James J. Galyean.  In addition to his parents, Mr. Tompkins was preceded in death by two sisters and three brothers-in-law, Marie and T.M. Cline, Irene and Jay Tilley, and Daniel Hughes; and three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Odell Herman Tompkins, Junior and Mae Greene, and Clarence and Beatrice Greene.  The funeral service will be held Saturday, May 13, 2023, at 2:00 PM at Charity Baptist Church, with the Rev. Michael Hawks and Robert Swiney officiating.  Burial will follow at Galyean Cemetery.  The family will receive friends Friday from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Charity Baptist Church.  Moody Funeral Services in Mount Airy is serving the family.
