Shirley Marie Belton Childress

Mrs. Shirley Marie Belton Childress, 95, of Mount Airy, passed away Friday March 18, 2016, at Northern Hospital. Mrs. Childress was born in Surry County on July 6, 1920, to Edward “Ed” Belton, Sr. and Nora Warren Belton Bondurant. She retired as a teaching assistant from Saint Paul Elementary School and was a faithful member of Flat Ridge Baptist Church. Left to cherish her memory are her daughters and a son-in-law, Jean Browder and Peggy and Paul Massey; a son and daughter-in-law, Terry and Marilyn Childress; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; several great-greatgrandchildren; and sisters and brothers-in-law, Hilda and Calvin Hoffman and Ruth Ann and Calvin Vestal. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Childress was preceded in death by her husband, William Herman “Bill” Childress; sisters, Millie Murray and Dot Poston; and by a brother, Edward Belton, Jr. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM, Monday, March 21, 2016, Flat Ridge Baptist Church by Rev. Dennis Bledsoe. Burial will follow in the Flat Rock Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service.
