Shirley Ann Puckett

Mrs. Shirley Ann Puckett 79, of Mt. Airy passed away Sunday, August 12, 2018 at Iredell Memorial Hospital in Statesville.  She was born August 8, 1939 to the late Phillip and Violet Cooper Adkins. Mrs. Puckett was retired from Northern Hospital of Surry County from the Skilled Nursing Floor; she also worked at Surry Community Nursing Center.  Mrs. Puckett’s legacy began over 35 years ago when she was told about an Angel Tree at the Salvation Army where she could go and pick a name from the tree and buy Christmas for a less fortunate family.  She loved the idea so much that she wanted to start something of this nature on her own.  Her son Danny got a Santa suit and the family went out all over the community giving out gifts and hope to less fortunate families.  Over time this grew and Shirley was then Sponsored by Golden Corral and Hardees where now they were able to provide gifts and a meal to those in need.  Since then she has provided hundreds of children and families with gifts and a meal in celebration of the holiday season.  Her selfless giving has provided many with hope and love over the years.  As a family we will continue to carry on her legacy as “Shirley’s Christmas Angels.” Left to cherish her memories are sons and daughters-in-law, Steve and Annette Golding, Danny and Angela Golding, and Michael Golding; daughters and sons-in-law, Theresa and Bobby Miller, Debbie and Greg Smith; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren all of Mount Airy; a sister, Phyllis Mays of Columbus Ohio.  In addition to her parents Mrs. Puckett was preceded in death by brothers, Earl Adkins of Tempe Arizona, Clarence Adkins and a sister Ruth Craigo both of Charleston WV, as well as her beloved companion and friend her dog Maggie .  A funeral service will be held on Friday, August 17, 2018 at 2:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mt. Airy with services conducted by Rev. Brian Frazier and Rev Dud Spencer.  Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery.  The family will receive friends on Thursday night from 6:00-8:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy and other times at the home of Mrs. Puckett 137 Walnut Drive, Mt Airy NC 27030.
