Mr. Stephen Scott Banner, Sr., 91, of Mount Airy, passed away Wednesday, March 16, 2011, at Central Continuing Care. Mr. Banner was born August 28, 1919, in Surry County, to the late Ed and Blanch Hale Banner. He retired from the United States Postal Service ane was a member of Rockford Street United Methodist Church. He served our country in the United States Army Air Force during World War II. Mr. Banner is survived by his wife, Helen Cain Banner of the home; and a son and daughter-in-law, Stephen Scott Banner, Jr. and Cindy Banner of King. In addition to his parents, Mr. Banner was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Jo Smith Banner; a daughter, Josephine Smith Banner; a sister, Lucille Tedder; and a brother, Clyde Banner. The funeral service will be held Sunday, March 20, 2011, at 2:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy, with the Rev. Harry Sherrill and the Rev. Richard Loman officiating. Burial will follow at Oakdale Cemetery, with military honors by the VFW Memorial Honor Guard. The family will receive friends Sunday at the funeral home from 1:00 until 2:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Rockford Street United Methodist Church, 520 Rockford Street, Mount Airy, NC 27030; Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, 401 Technology Lane, Suite 200, Mount Airy, NC 27030; or to a charity of the donor's choice. The family would like to express their appreciation to the staff of Central Continuing Care for the wonderful care given to Mr. Banner.
