Stephen M. Halasz, III

Mr. Stephen Michael Halasz, III, of Surry County passed away at his home, Wednesday, November 2, 2022.  Born in 1959, in Los Angeles to the late Stephen Michael Halasz, Jr. and Mildred Mae Lasky Halasz.  Mr. Halasz, a former U.S. Marine, served under Presidents Carter and Regan administration on HMX-1 helicopter squadron.  After the military, he resided in North Carolina and served with Surry County Sheriffs Department.  His passion for nature and hiking led him to his greatest accomplishment, completing the Appalachian Trail.  He enjoyed the beach, the outdoors, cycling, cooking, and visiting his family and friends on the west coast.  He is survived by his children, siblings, nephews, aunts, uncles, and extended family.  He will always be remembered for his stories, his giving heart, and love of family and friends.  A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm, Saturday, November 12, 2022, at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mt. Airy.  The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday, from 1:00 pm until the time of the service.  In lieu of flowers the family has requested that memorial contributions be made to the Appalachian Trail Conservancy or to the charity of the donor’s choice.  Online condolences may be made at www.moodyfuneralservices.com.
