Susan Louise Fulk

     Susan Louise Fulk, 77, of Pilot Mtn., NC passed away on July 23, 2022 at Central Continuing Care in Mt. Airy.  The cause of death was metastatic brain cancer.  Susan is survived by her brother;  Mark Edward Fulk (Beth), nephew, Charles Howell Fulk (Betsy) from Winston-Salem, NC, niece Elizabeth Fulk Lincicome (Scott),  great-niece Eve Myers Lincicome of Raleigh, NC. and several first cousins across the country with whom she stayed in close contact.

     Susan was predeceased by her mother, Barbara Balcom Fulk; father, Maxwell Edward Fulk, and brother, Robert Michael Fulk.

     Susan was born in Oxnard, CA on November 8, 1944 and moved with her family to Pilot Mtn. in 1949.  Susan was a dedicated student whose beauty and grace earned her several scholastic awards and the coveted beauty contest, Miss American Legion.  After graduating from East Surry High School, Susan earned a BSN degree in nursing from the University of NC at Chapel Hill.  Following her graduation from UNC, Susan continued her education earning a Masters degree in Psychiatric Nursing from Catholic University in Washington, DC.  Susan’s calling in psychiatric nursing spanned 42 years and allowed her to help numerous families in Richmond, VA; Virginia Beach, VA; Charlottesville, VA; Mt. Airy, NC and Pilot Mtn. NC.

     Susan was a kind soul who, after retirement, found joy in helping others with simple gestures of kindness and compassion.  Susan was a true free spirit, a “character” who would spend each and every day looking for ways to bring joy and support to friends and neighbors through phone checks, visits and financial assistance. Gifts from Susan would sometimes just show up on someone’s porch. 

     Susan’s family wishes to send a special thank you to the staff at Central Continuing Care in Mt. Airy, NC for their comfort and care and gratitude to her loyal friend for over 40 years, Anna Nichols.  A private family service will be held for Susan.  Memorial Donations in Susan’s name may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care , Kids Path Program www.mtnvalleyhospice.org; (888)789-2922
