Swanson Leon Mayes

Mr. Swanson Leon Mayes, 79, of Mt. Airy, passed away at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home, Thursday, March 3, 2022.  He was born in Stokes County, NC, May 30, 1942, to the late Swanson Monroe and Effie Fannie Parker Mayes.  He bravely served in the U.S. Navy.  Mr. Mayes was a talented man that could repair most anything.  He worked for various mobile home companies as well as himself during his career.  He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and brother.  He disciplined his children hard but loved just as deeply.  Whether he was spending weeks at the Outer Banks in the fall or sitting on a creek bank for hours, he was always ready to fish.  The ocean seemed to be his tranquility, Mr. Mayes would wade through deep water, to listen and watch for the right spot and that big catch.  He is survived by his wife Betty Jean Payne Mayes; his daughter Tina Mayes; two sons and a daughter-in-law, John and Engle Mayes, and Wyatt Mayes; eleven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; sisters and a brother-in-law, Linda and Danny Hooker, Sylvia Hayden; brothers and a sister-in-law, Wayne Michael and Tammy Jo Mayes, Roger Delano Mayes.  In addition to his parents, Mr. Mayes was preceded in death by a brother Nathaniel “Buck” Mayes.  The family will be having a private service.  Online condolences may be made at www.moodyfuneralservices.com.
