Mrs. Tavie Francis Simpson Shumate, age 89 of Mt. Airy passed away on Saturday evening May 31, 2008 at Golden Living Center in Mt. Airy. She was born in Surry County on September 6, 1918 to the late Eugene and Josie Bingman Simpson. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by one granddaughter Kimberly Michelle Shumate; five sisters Roxie Simpson, Eva Durham, Vernice Bowman, Thelma Carter and Kathleen East, three brothers Fred, Gilbert and Delmar Simpson, and a very special friend Gracie Atkin. She was a member of Piney Grove Baptist Church. Surviving are the father of her children Robert Shumate; two daughters and sons-in-law Brenda and Ray Freeman, Sharon and Johnny Caudill all of Dobson; five sons and daughters-in-law Robert Junior and Jewel Shumate of Level Cross, Billy Shumate of White Plains, Bobby and Linda Shumate of Dobson, Denny "Dink" and Gaynell Shumate of White Plains, and James and Renda Shumate of Mt. Airy; by seventeen grandchildren; twenty six great grandchildren, five great-great grandchildren; three sisters and brother-in-law Stella Marion, Shirley Nichols, Georgia and Bill Sumner of Mt. Airy. Funeral services will be held 11:00 A.M. Tuesday June 3, 2008 at Piney Grove Baptist Church with burial to follow in the church cemetery. Her body will remain at Moody-Davis Funeral Home until taken to the church to lie 30. min. before the service. Rev. Kermit Gray will conduct the service. The family will receive friends at Moody-Davis Funeral Home in Dobson on Monday evening from 7 until 9 P.M. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Golden Living Center/Surry Community Nursing Home 542 Allred Mill Road, Mt. Airy, NC 27030.
