The Rev. Tommy Claude Smith, 82, of Mount Airy, was called home to be with the Lord at his home surrounded by his loving family on Thursday, June 27, 2013. He was born August 17, 1930, in Mount Airy, and grew up in the Surry County area until moving away for pastoral work. He was preceded in death by his parents, Claude Richard and Ella Hicks Smith; and a sister, Stella Montgomery. He attended Flat Rock School and was active in sports. He was a longtime member of the Flat Rock Pentecostal Holiness Church. Those left to cherish his memory are his loving and devoted wife, Clouis G. Smith of 63 years; two sons, Tim Smith of Mount Airy and David Smith and his wife, Wanda, of Ridgeway, VA; a daughter, Sharon Lambeth and her husband, Terry, of Kure Beach; three grandchildren, Chad Lambeth, Kristy Myers, and Tim Smith, Jr.; two step-grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two great-step-grandchildren; four nieces; and a nephew. He and his faithful wife pastored several churches in the Cornerstone Conference of the International Pentecostal Holiness Church during his tenure as minister and pastor, including State Road, NC, South Boston, VA, Newton, NC, Hurt, VA, Thomasville, NC, Martinsville, VA, and Claudville, VA. He was a Godly man of great faith, who was a true gift from God. He always lived what he preached and had a gift in helping others see and use their God-given talents and abilities to their fullest potential. He was a humble man and a loving husband and father, who always put his Lord first and himself last. He never met a stranger and ministered faithfully to those in need and helped to lead several hundred to salvation. He had a contagious smile with a great, witty sense of humor and always had funny stories and life experiences to share. He lived life gratefully to the fullest and will be sorely missed by his family and his many lifelong friends with his sweet spirit and generous nature. The funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, June 29, 2013, at Mountain View Pentecostal Holiness Church. The service will be conducted by the Rev. Neil Pressley, Mr. Leon Custer, Dr. David Sparks, Bishop Doyle Marley, and Rev. Tommy Fuquay. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday from 6:00 until 8:30 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy. Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be made to the Mountain View Pentecostal Holiness Church Cemetery Fund, c/o Golden Epperson, 263 Hatchers Chapel Road, Claudville, VA 24076.
