Mrs. Thelma Bernice Simmons Davis, 93, of Winston-Salem, passed away Thursday, January 24, 2013, at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson, surrounded by her loving family. Mrs. Davis was born March 6, 1919, in McDowell County, WV, one of six children born to the Rev. Charles Arthur and Bessie Scales Simmons. Thelma worked as a beautician for many years and was a member and Sunday school teacher at South Fork Baptist Church. Thelma's love of gardening, her love of sewing, her friendly disposition, and her love of baking and sharing her Moravian cookies will be long remembered by her precious family. She is survived by a sister, Inez Simmons Cox of Mount Airy; a brother, Andrew Benjamin "Ben" Simmons of Mount Airy; two sisters-in-law, Daisy N. Simmons of Mount Airy and Vernon B. Davis of Claudville, VA; and several nieces and nephews, including a special nephew, Grayson Simmons of Mount Airy. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Davis was preceded in death by her husband, Carnal Odis Davis; an infant son, Michael Davis; and three brothers, Wendell Simmons, Perce Simmons, and Aubrey Simmons. The funeral service will be held Monday, January 28, 2013, at 2:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy, with the Rev. Lee Johnson officiating. Burial will follow at Oakdale Cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday from 1:00 until 2:00 PM at the funeral home, and other times at the home of Andrew Benjamin "Ben" Simmons, 161 Myers Drive, Mount Airy. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home, 945 Zephyr Road, Dobson, NC 27017; or Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, 401 Technology Lane, Suite 200, Mount Airy, NC 27030.
