Mrs. Thelma Alma Edwards Haynes, 90, of Dobson, passed away Monday, May 17, 2010, at Northern Hospital of Surry County. She was born December 10, 1919, in Surry County, to the late John Eldridge and Laura Ada Holt Edwards. Mrs. Haynes was a member of Salem Baptist Church and was an avid gardener. She loved sewing and made many beautiful quilts for her family. Over the years, she was a homemaker, farmer and mill worker. She and her late husband, Gurney William Haynes, operated a greenhouse for many years. She leaves to cherish her memory her devoted children, Phyllis and Kenneth Laird of Ormond Beach, FL, Frances and Thurman Caldwell of Charlotte, and Michael Haynes of Mount Airy; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a brother, Ted Edwards of Dobson; and two sisters, Delsie Wolson of Mount Airy and Doris and Roc Venella of Newport News, VA. In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Haynes was preceded in death by two sisters, Vesta Snider and Elsie Vaughn; and three brothers, Alvin Edwards, Carl Edwards, and Noah Edwards. Her funeral service will be held at 12:00 noon Thursday, May 20, 2010, at Salem Baptist Church, conducted by Dr. Bobby Lewis. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church on Thursday from 11:00 am until the hour of the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Salem Baptist Church, 430 Rockford Road, Dobson, NC 27017.
